Philosophy/FAQ

Philosophy

Using a documentary approach honed from years of making pictures for newspapers, magazines and news agencies, I approach each wedding as its own unique assignment. In my sense, it’s an important day of family history for the bride and groom, a celebration to be preserved for generations in the most honest and creative way possible.

I don’t have packages per se as I prefer to learn what you are interested in and tailor my services to your exact wishes.

My preference is to commit myself for the entire day to photograph everything from the time you are preparing with friends and family until the time you leave the reception. For this service, I charge $2000 for continuous coverage that will yield no less than 800 pictures. 4x6 proofs of photoshopped images are included as well as all images saved at their highest resolution on disk. This means you will own all the images I make and never have to go through me to order prints.

Your wedding pictures should tell a story, not just of what you were wearing or how you posed, but how you were feeling, the joy, the tears, the unexpected laughs. Telling that story isn’t just a job for me, it’s an opportunity and a passion.

Please let me know what you need. I’m happy to customize my approach to meet your specific needs. To that end, I’m available for a free consultation on request.

Thanks,

Jim

Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to the photojournalism, will you do posed shots?
Absolutely. When we sit down to talk about your schedule, we’ll determine the time and place for your family group shots and any other  posed shots you have in mind.

What type of photo gear do you use?
I use professional Nikon camera bodies and lenses. I always travel with backup bodies, batteries and strobes.

Do you shoot digital or film?
I learned and shot film for 10 years professionally, but now shoot 100% digital.

Are you the person who will shoot our wedding?
Yes. I shoot every wedding I book and I only shoot one wedding per day.

Where are you based?
I’m in Portland, Oregon but I travel often to Seattle and L.A. and have photographed weddings in all over the country. I love to travel and will gladly go anywhere to photograph a wedding.

Do you charge travel fees?
I prefer to charge a flat rate that includes travel. For airfare and lodging, I ask only to be reimbursed.

And we’ll get all of our images on a disk?
Yes. You will get everything I shoot at the same high-resolution that I shot it at. I also personally edit every wedding, select and photoshop around 150 images and proof them at 4x6 so you have physical prints that you receive with delivery of your disks.

Do you work with an assistant or second shooter?
As a photojournalist, I’ve learned how to work in a quiet and unobtrusive way. If the wedding calls for an assistant, I’ll bring one but I don’t work with second shooters because my clients hire me for my personal vision, style, and discreet method of working.

How many pictures will we get and when will we get them?
I don't guarantee an exact number but generally you'll see at least 800 images for eight hours of shooting. You can expect your proofs within four weeks of the wedding.

Can we give you a shot list to work from?
Definitely. In fact, I ask for a shot list. Shot lists help me get a sense of what's important to you.

How intrusive will your lighting, tripods, etc be?
Not at all. My goal is that you forget that I'm there and are just able to enjoy your day.

How do we book you?
I request a 25% non-refundable deposit to secure your date. I’ll also provide a contract. The deposit is applied to the balance due.
